I was thinking today about turbo cars I used to run and how it was always a good idea to install a turbo timer so that the hot oil doesn't sit on the bearings and wear them out quicker. This chain of thought made me wonder if return style Superchargers like Vortech would bennefit from a similar practice? Would letting the motor idle a few extra minutes before turning it off alloing the potentially hotter oil to be exchanged with cooler oil (there for extending bearing and seal life) be beneficial? And on the same thought, would an inline oil cooler help it at all? It just seems to me that Superchargers add a lot of heat to the motor throughnormal operationand I was just thinking that anything that helps reduce heat would be good. Or is it just wasting time and money?
There is a big differance between the turbo and SC. The main reason that a turbo should be idled some prior to shut down, is it is not directly driven by the engine like a SC. The turbo is free to spin down from 50,000 + rpms for over a minute with the engine shut down, and not feeding it oil. It is during that time that damage is caused. On a SC, the impeller speed is directly tied to the crank shaft, and when the engine stops, the SC stops. They both would benifit from a 30 second idle, prior to reving them up.
After a hard run, any engine, NA or boosted would benifit from a short idle prior to shut down.

Turbo timers are, imo, a waste of time. It is something ricers put on to say "ive got a turbo timer on my car." Before I get flamed, let me explain.A turbo timer is designed to let the car run at idle a minute or so to let the oil cool down after running a turbo. But the only time this will be an issue is if you run the crap out of your car at full boost and then stop and shut it off immediately. Most people who run on the street dontrun at full boost all the time and then immediately shut down, except for the retards in turboed hondas/acuras/nissans etc..... that feel the need to have the gas pedal to the floor everywhere they go. Again, this is my opinion on the subject.I am currently working on a homebuilt turbo for my 2002 v6 and will not run a turbo timer, didnt even think about it. The only thing I may do is install an oil temp guage.
