Oil Return System Problem
+1 dont be lazy take off the pan
Honestly, the only reason I would recommend using a punch and keeping the pan on would be simplicity for those that don't have the tools to take the pan off. That way you don't get a bunch of metal shavings in your pan as opposed to if you tried to drill a hole in the pan while it's on, in which case you'll get lots of metal in the pan which could cause quite a bit of damage.
The best route would be to drill into the pan & weld a fitting on, the next best route would be to drill a hole in the pan, thread the fitting in, then using a nut on the backside to help hold. I would recommend using silicone if you're not doing the weld route to help ensure you don't have a leak around the fitting.
