Default Decided on Turbo, Need Help!!

Hey all,

I finally chose to do a turbo instead of a super for my 2005 GT. I will be looking to put the order in around end of March but I wanted to get everything pieced together before so I can be ready. So in comes all of you who know about turbos and so on, who hopefully wont mind helping out a newbie as far as FI goes.

I elected to go with the HP Performance stage 1 kit, unless someone can suggest a better kit. Based on the handful of kits I have seen...this is one of the better ones. I know the customer service has been rumored to be pretty bad, but the kit has received high marks.

My engine is bone stock, 5 speed GT, but I would like to eventually build it up to 600 or so horse which is why this kit works out nice. Being stock...I know to keep around 8 psi around 450-475 HP is safe.

Out of everything listed in this kit, what should I upgrade out of it? Keep in mind,I want to keep it @ 8 PSI for now, but down the line thatll change. Do I need bigger injectors? KB Boostapump (options from HP performance)? Change anything other than whats in the kit already? Itll be a few years before I put more money into this to build it, so I guess Im just asking what will make this kit perform the best while keeping it safe on a stock motor? Do I even need to upgrade anything out of this kit to maintain good performance?

As for the tune, I plan on buying the SCT from brenspeed and having them do a custom tune for my turbo, I know brenspeed is very highly recommended for their tuning services. Any thoughts on that?

Also...about the BOV...whats the difference really? Kit includes a bosch, but theres an option for a 50mm tial BOV...whats this change? I know its a newbie question, sorry.

Ill also do a electronic boost controller...need a few ideas for that though....and of course...the gauge question! I would like to do the 3 gauge pillar...so which 3 gauges should I mount into those? I know air-fuel and a boost gauge are good ones..anything else? What type / manufacture / wideband? All of that..if someone can point me in the direction of the high quality most recommend gauges, that would be great.

Thats everything that's included. If someone could help me out with my above questions as well as any other thoughts or ideas, I would appreciate it. I have read a number of things from the forums, and other sites so I have done my research to an extent, but still need some help in fine tuning some things.

The other kit I was looking at is this one...

Any ideas on this? I was worried about the piping since they aren't ceramic coated for heat resistance. This one is also a ball-bearing turbo...not sure of the HP is one or not.

Anyways, many thanks to all, look forward to joining the boosted club shortly.

Hellion FTMFW! Especially with an 05 car I would say that its the best kit. Parts are nothing but the best and the kits are kept in stock unlike HP Performance. Ive heard so many bad things about them from customer service to long wait times. Ive heard of them taking 6 months to actually recieve the whole kit after they have already paid. I have a hellion on my 03 and its a great fitting kit. No issues yet! Kit arrived the next week!

I looked into Hellion...

I wanted to do suspension changes though and lower it down, and I know hellion says thats a no no for their kit.

Any comments on that? Or is there a way around that?

Thanks a bunch.

i hear a lot of complaints about the HP kits as well as their customer service

as far as the BOV goes, bosch works but tial is top of the line.

i have an aem tru boost, boost controller which doubles as a boost/vac gauge. you can mount it on an a-piller pod. i have mine mounted in a cage pod because i have a roll cage.

as far as the wideband goes, if you arent going to do the tuning yourself, you dont really need one. the dyno tuner will have a wideband that he will use when he tunes your motor

My company has just released a twin turbo top mount kit in conjunction w/ Garrett. Uses Garret tt28r turbos, easily upgradeable to gt-30-71r's or even gt-35r...plenty of room for growth, you won't out grow the kit. Very high quality, complete kit. Full fuel management, ECU, intercooler, tial BOV, ect. Ill PM you with more info. Here is a picture so you have an idea.

the SS lines, the aluminum fluid containers are all included. and its bolt on, no internal needed.

I would stay away from the bosch valves, they aren't the strongest. They make multiple types, one can hold up to a decent amount of pressure. Plastic valves generally aren't the best idea. For low boost they're ok.

My personal recommendation is boost or boost/vac gauge, fuel psi (unless you have one mounted elsewhere), the 3rd gauge depends on the setup if you're getting a tune you could go with an egt gauge, it's a cheaper option. The two cheapest widebands I know of (excluding the JAW) are the Aem 6in1 (if bought from ebay) & the summit wb kit which uses the lc-1 controller. Both will cost around $250 with shipping. I don't usually recommend narrowbands, but they are useful in telling if something is wrong.
The only reason I recommend getting a wb or egt is because you're going to be changing the boost levels from time to time from what I gather. Same with fuel pressure.
Neither are required but better safe than sorry & gauges cost less than an engine if something goes wrong.

As for the pipe coating, if the kit comes with a decent grade stainless you don't need the coating. higher grades of stainless steel are good at holding heat in as opposed to mild steel. If the exhaust plumbing is mild steel then the coating is a good idea both on inside & out, for stainless not so much.

I am debating between the TT setup from Impulse (see above) and the Hellion kit.

Waiting for the signifigant other to weigh in her thoughts before making the decision.

Thanks again for all the help guys...Ive learned a lot from these boards.

Looks like you have to relocate a bunch of stuff in that Impulse kit. Whatever kit you go with make sure you get a realistic delivery time out of them.
