So today i worked on a 62 impala and installed some speakers and a radio, it had a 350 with str8 pipes maybe like 3ft from the header he had his mufflers and ran straight pipes alll the way back. It sounded sooo mean like that drag car rumble. I was thinking if i do the straight pipe to a glass pack then straight pipe all the way back what kinda sound would that give me?

 

louder at idle for sure (no cats) and more throaty throughout powerband. it will sound more like a powerful boat.

 

so if i want that drag car like sound like that hollow eaxhaust throaty sound what do i need to do with the 5.0 engine?

 

make it a drag car engine! lol
exhaust only plays a part in the sound. heads/cam etc make the real sound. throw a h/c/i kit on your car and you will see the difference

 

Take out your mufflers and weld a peice of exhaust pipe back in to where they were. I got a nice muscle car sound with mine.

 

A well "tuned" exhaust system such as Magnaflow will out perform straight pipes for HP & torque gains. Keep in mind one thing about the older vehicles......big valves and standard cam engines will ALWAYS sound throatier and meaner than any overhead cam engine. The nature of the beast and how it achieves aspiration. Just listen to some sound bytes on some of the catback manufacturer's websites and compare the 5.0 Mustang engine sounds to the 4.6's. All the 5.0's sound much deeper. And remember, SOUND does not necessarily = POWER.
