Default the - in the h pipe

On the H pipes, does the horizontal pipe between the two primary pipes, actually do any thing or is it for support?
I ask because i have a guy that can just make me two 2 1/2 inch pipes from the manifold into the muffers, which i figured was effectivly an h pipeish.
Cheers
for any responses

in balances out the flow. each cylender doesn't fire at the same time and to help make up for that they connect the pipe. x- pipe creates more of an eqilibrium but h is good too (but the sound is better on the H )

Yes, the connecting pipe acts as a balancing pipe to help organize exhaust pulses.
