Default Nitrous help/advice

ok so im very strongly considering nitrous for my car. it probably wil be a wet NX kit and probably will not be done until the summer after i have the money for it. i was talking to my friend today and he said that i would kill my engine with nitrous. i have researched it on this site and i didnt think i would be killing it...i would run either a 75 or 100 shot. i would have a bottle warmer, purge, a nitrous pressure gauge, a fuel pressure safety switch, and an nhra blow down tube. i know it probably wont kill my engine...but will i be taking a lot of the life out of it? like in the long run?

if so...is there anything else i can/should get to keep it safe...like a tune for the nitrous? i am going to have this car for a long time...and i will not have the money to just replace the engine or something if something bad happens...so i want to make sure ill be ok. will the engine deal with it alright? or is shortened engine life just a byproduct of going faster?

also...would i need different spark plugs and/or a timing retard? i have done my homework and just want to make sure my plans can go off without a hitch when the time comes. i have put links to the things i am probably going to purchase below.

thank you for your help and advice.

Run a step colder spark plugs and pull 4* timing. Look into an rpm activated window switch. This will keep the nitrous from coming on at too low of RPM and shut it off before you hit the rev limiter. Rev limiter on nitrous = very bad. You should be fine at 75hp or 100hp. But you will get greedy and want more.

what kit has your friend run and had trouble with?
he's following the myth that you will blow up on nitrous....

you blow up on nitrous from being STUPID on nitrous.

for the second part...yes, it's a byproduct of going fast.

using nitrous is LESS detrimental than a blower or turbo or high compression NA motor, since your raising cylinder pressure ONLY while you spray it. which is about 99.99999% of it's driving time.

and it is the same exact thing happening to the engine as a blower or turbo.

instead of mechanically packing air in, your chemically separating n2o into 2 parts nitrogen and 1 part oxygen.

he was running like a 70 shot on a honda prelude. i think he only had the kit tho...he didnt have any extras at all.

you said its a byproduct of going fast...how much is it going to hurt it in reality? i kno it depends on how much you spray and stuff...but i just want to try to figure out if i should do it or not. i really want to...but i cant afford to lower the engine life a lot.

Look at it this way. Your friend put a 70hp shot on a 100hp car. Do you want to spray 250hp on yours? You have twice the cylinders and probably over 3x the displacement.

It will last 180k miles instead of 185k miles. You can't put a number on it, but I will say nitrous doesn't kill motors; detonation does. The motor will wear itself out due to many other reasons before the nitrous will kill it as long as YOU don't let it. When nitrous hurts a motor it's generally caused by user error and less likely parts failure (parts other than the nitrous system but that still effect the kit i.e. ignition and fuel system).

thats what i kind of figured...i just wanted to hear it from somebody else. lol.

one last question...can u flip the switch to arm it while you are already at full throttle? or would that hurt it? cuz i dont want to arm it from a launch...i just have street tires and i think my traction would....well...disappear.

ditto that...............

yeah you can spray it that way, but it's better to accomplish the same thing w/ a window switch.

or get a set of cheap cheater slicks, and spray it from the dig. you'll beat cars (they will quit) that you shouldn't , cuz they quit b4 they realize they could catch you.

i also plan on getting a NX kit and was just wondering how the blow down tube works? Do you direct it outside of your car? I hate that when people here the word nitrous they say that you are going to blow up.

A blow down tube will vent the nitrous outside the passenger compartment. Unless your bottle hits enough pressure to open the burst valve (use a torch, it will open), it's just for looks. You'd almost have to cook your bottle to get the burst valve to open. lol
