Default Larger Diameter Tires

Has anyone ever tried going to a largerdiameter tire, as well as wider- like approx 30" diameter?

What is the downside of going not only wider, but BIGGER?

Heavier, and relatively higher rotational moment of inertia (due to the diameter increase as well as the weight gain). The physical difficulties in getting something that big to fit without rubbing probably involve compromising away from what's actually a pretty good suspension.

Increased weight adversely affects suspension function, meaning that corneringand ride quality will both suffer.

Increased weight and MOI adversely affects straight line performance. Just to stay even, you'd need to gear the car more than the 11% deeper that 30" represents vs the OE 27" (which IMHO are already about an inch too tall). 30" tires with 4.10's vs 27" tires and 3.55's would be a driver's race every time.

Hi case ace,

I've got a friend Steve who runs GAS and his car has 29"+ tall tires on his car. It is featured in one of this months car magazines I don't recall which one. They look great but that is all ther is to like about what they do to your car as the performance is not so good due to all that extra weight being located in what is probably the worse possibleplace. They hurt accelleration and braking but the ride turned out to be prettygood!

I'll guess that Steve is not running OE springs and damping either. . .

Hi Norm,

I didn't look carefullybut he said it has a FR500C suspension with the addition of a Saleen PJ Watt's linkage which I did see under the car. The thing has a build 5.0l motor and he claims 600+BHP all motor but it doesn't feel that strong to me. Maybe it is the 400lbs. of wheels and tires slowing it down.

F1 & Norm....please explain. We know that large diameter tires are better for traction at SOME point. Obviously, with a certain amount of HP it becomes necessary to move to larger dia. tires, hence the dragster, but what are you suggesting that point is?

I am not at that point, but my brother has just ordered an '08 and was asking, because he is thinking SC. Are we talking 450? 500? My guess would be if you can spin your current tires, you keep going bigger and/or wider until you can barely spin them.

I wouldn't try going bigger diameter... It just negates the 4.10 gear you put in your car... Go a bit wider and run them at a lower pressure if you're having problems hooking at the strip...
