I use a crescent wrench to hold the nut in place while torquing the strut itself instead of the nut. I have no idea if that's actually a good idea (if it's not we might both learn something from this), but it's worked so far!

The problem I have is that the nut is in a recess that only a socket can hold. When you crank on the socket, the shaft spins as well. I have read that some use a piece of material to protect the upper shaft and clamp on it.

I'm not a big fan of gripping on something that could otherwise be damaged - even only if cosmetically.

Ideally an open ended wrench that could reach into the recess and then a smaller wrench to hold the small top hex would be preferred.

I need an impact tool.

No allen on top of the strut though.

A small hex wrench (10mm??) may not interfere with the relief in the socket.

Ah, yeah my Roush struts have the allen on top of the strut... didn't think of the stockers being different. Same concept though.

I used a 13/16" open end wrench to turn the retaining nut while holding the stem in place with a 10mm 6 pt socket, but the nut was not in a recessed area.

A couple more options ... a pass-through ratchet such as the one used here might work too, but not sure if the right size socket is available, ...

... or a deep offset wrench.

Yes a pass-through socket or a deep offset would work . . . I do not have the socket or ratchet. I need a bigger offset wrench.

Thanks
