GT500 Driving Experience
Hi Guys,
I would love to hear from those of you who are owners of a GT500 on your driving experience around the city.
I'm from Australia and am looking to put down a deposit on a GT500 within the next couple of days, for import into Australia for my personal use. My only concern is how difficult it will be to drive with so much power, amongst heavy traffic where it can be slow going, or frequent stopping and starting. Is it easy to control the power output in these circumstances so you don't end up giving it too much? Is the clutch stiff making these situations difficult, etc.?

My GT500 is my daily driver, and I have a 20-mile commute each way through suburban stop-and-go traffic. The really nice thing about the GT500 is that, if you don't stomp on it, it's a rather docile beast. (That's not to say I try to be first in line at every light so I can enjoy what the car can really do!)
I manage to get 17-18 mpg in my daily commute, and 22-23 mpg on long highway drives. Of course, when I drive it like I stole it, I get 10-12 mpg! It's definitely a comfortable road cruiser.

Exactly what he said. It is easy to drive behind someone (if you have too!) and the clutch work is easy, it has a different feel from a GT, but no harder to ease off with. It should be a great daily driver.

I'm very pleased with how my GT500 drives.
There is no problem controlling power output.
Of course, any car, with a manual transmission, is more work in stop and go traffic.

It is a non-issue. If you could drive any manual transmission car on the streets you drive, you can just as well drive your new GT500. It can go just as slow as any other car, but it is hard to do.
The new Shelby GT500’s are surprisingly (pleasantly I might add) mild mannered and nice and quiet when you are not stepping on it. If you keep your foot out of it, most people riding with you would not even know they were riding in anything special.
I will say that being used to driving a 2005 F-450 turbo diesel with 4.30/1 gears and a 6-speed manual transmission the first gear in the GT500 feels kind of tall to me when I am trying to take off easy, like in gravel, it is quite easy to stall it if I am trying to take off real easy without revenging it up a bit and slipping the clutch a little. You can’t just slowly release the clutch and take off with no throttle like you can in my low-geared truck.
Enjoy your new GT500, I know I enjoy mine.

I've driven manual transmissions, for over 40 years, and I've stalled my GT500, several times, pulling away from stops without giving it enough gas.

Congratulations on the new car!
I'll tell you how it drives this spring (I guess that's fall for you)? I drove mine from the dealer to the garage and it has sat there for a month while I wait for the snow to melt.
On the drive home it was very smooth and the clutch seemed pretty simple.

The GT-500 puts a smile on my face everytime i drive it, wise decision. Ive had mine since 10 /07 These cars will hold their value, not that I ever would sell mine. Unless im trading it in for a Ford GT. I found the clutch a little different at firstthan my 01 GT but after a few days i was use to it. I keep my revs at about 1000 RPMs on take off and feather it out, but its easy to stall if youslip off the clutchtoo fast. I had to put an aftermarket exhaust on so I could hear the engine better, im use to shifting by the sound and the Shelby is to quiet to me, thats one of my only problems with the car. It needs fatter stickyreartires at least 305's , the Nitto 555 are good and BF Goodrich are also good. youll need at least a 10 wide rim.enjoy your ride.
