Question How do Make a Double Din fit in a Single Din Slot

Can it be done?
I have a 96 GT 5pd. with the great Mach 1 radio. It has a TAPE deck. Under the head unit there is a super cool Cd player. in 96, the year I grad from college, I would loved it. But thing is I bought the car in 2007 and spent last year getting it the point I can drive it daily without smoking our belt catching fire. Well the car is not out dated but the radio is. I have to use the tape deck to play my Ipod in the car. since I plain to keep this car for at least 5 or 10 years; I would like to upgrade I would like a NAv unit with dvd player and rear view cam. To this I can go with the easy way. (single din with motor screen) or the hard way (double din with fixed screen). now if I was into just the way I would buy the single din. it would not only be easier but cheaper and when my buddys sit in the car and they will be impressed. But seen I am more like Tim the tool guy from TV. I love an excuse to use power tools or buy new power tools.
ok that is pre stuff now here are My questions.
  1. Has anyone thought of making the single din a double a car like mine
  2. How much work would it take to move the ac ***** to the bottom din.
  3. If I don't move the ac down then cut the 2 dins to make one big one without lot of fab work
  4. If this turns to be more problem then it is worth and I go with the single din radio what can I put in the CD spot.

I am serious about this radio. the cord to my Ipod is driving me nuts and I got the engine work done under my budget so I got the money to do this now. if you want to see pics of the radio i put some on my profile.

they made a double din dash a few years after your car. The underdash supports are a little different and it requires a little trimming but not alot. If you go to the junk yard and get the dash piece it is nearly a bolt in......

I cover deck integration of the mach460 on page 2 of my cardomain page. Your wiring is the same

I am not sure what year they started with the double din dash. I think you might also need the cover that goes around the shifter but you will be able to tell that it is the same dash with a double din opening.

IS there anyplace I can go to find out what might fit? most pictures I searched had outside pics not inside.
: ) on a cool note may mean it is notsomething a lot of folks have done. I like the "wow" factor and the "how did you do that?"
I called a junk yard and they were not much help. MY buddy that works on cars said that if I know the one that fits he will get it from pull apart.
i know somebody out there thinks this might be cool and point me in te right direction.

what do you mean what will fit? What deck or what dash?

if you are calling junk yards and asking ask for a double din radio bezel for the same year as your car. See if they have anything with in a few years.

there are a few under a quick search on ebay for mustang radio bezel

Dude first of all you are a lot of help Thank you for your post. I build computers and networks not cars. so I feel dumb because I was looking for the entire center peice. From the dash to the shifter. not just the front bezel. is that the only part I need?

You might also need the shifter bezel(the black part below that dash piece that goes around the shifter) but that is it. As I said you need to trim some pieces of the underdash but it is not a huge surgery and it is plastic, you don't need a plasma cutter.

take my word for it you can make alot of friends if you take some pics along the way and post how you did it. You are not the first to ask and a couple of others have come here and done it but nobody has taken any pics to show how.

while researching on the web I came accross a In Car PC's. They sell them on ebay and other sites. I have seen YouTube videos on them. since the whole point of going to the double din was to put a built in NAv System; and I am a Computer geek i figure why not make this the fastest PC in town.

Here's the part where I make friends
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/fabr...reen-dash.html

This shows step by step almost how to do it.
So as You have guessed I am starting a New thread.
