Default Transmission fluid on shifter base

I searched the forum, but couldn't find anything on this. For the past week, I had a smell of transmission fluid in the car, it could have been longer, but the smell the decomposing mouse may have masked it.
There is transmission fluid collecting at the base of the shifter (automatic trans).
Any help pointing me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim P

I have no idea how it could get there, either.

But it is transmission fluid.
