Default 400 HP out of a 289

I want to get my 289 as close as possible to 400HP, but we are stuck on deciding what heads/headers/cam(hydraulic flat tappet) we are going to use. We already have the pistons, crank, intake, and carb. We can't go over 400hp, as that's the max for the rear end we have in it. We were going to go with the Edelbrock E-Street Power Package, but we would like to get closer to that 400hp mark. (CJPonyParts has it listed to go to 321hp) Would appreciate any help! (Besides telling me to go buy a 351)

Pistons: 30 over 9:1
Crank: Standard 289 crank
Intake: Edelbrock Performer
Carb: Holley 650

It can be done or at least close to 400 to the crank. But it would be maxed out and almost non street able at that point. Edelbrock performer rpm heads would help a lot with long tube or try y headers. I don’t think you will get 400 out of the E street kit. I have 385 hp and 420 tq to the crank on my 331 stroker with E street heads and other performance bolt ons. So that will not happen with a 289 to be realistic. Cobra automotive by Curt Vogt sells a 500 hp 289 but it’s 35,000 bones! So that should give you a good idea of what it will take. Stoke it to a 331 or 347 and it’s doable and street driveable. My 331 has a 289-302 fireing order and badged as a 289 under the hood. Nobody would know if I didn’t tell them it’s stroked.

I don't need it to be right at 400hp, just as close as possible while still being street able.

I'm thinking about going with an Edelbrock Performer Plus (.448/.472) Part#:2122 and E-Street heads (60cc combustion, 170cc intake, 60cc exhaust) Part#:5025.
These come from the Edelbrock 2027 parts kit, but it is rated at ~321hp, but I would like to get more than this. Ideally around 350hp.

If you are on a budget these are the older heads that they started calling the “e-street” they are the same exact demensions. I have these on my car no. Run excellent !

why not go with a set of AFR Heads or Trick Flow heads and order a custom ground cam. you will spend just a little bit more money but it will perform much much better. They cam can be ground to the rpm range you want and the trans and gear set can be taken into account.

Im 5k into my 347 with trickflow heads, ( i went the easy route and put a x303 cam) which runs well but is not optimal for a throttle body fuel injection set up. It got more power out of a 670 carb but much better mileage from the atomic efi.

it is right at 399 hp and 425 ftlbs of torque

you would most likely be best off mot using the 289 and getting a 302 roller block and building it.

Would that engine setup go well with a toploader 4spd? I've been told that I should heavily base my decision on what transmission I go with, and we plan to use a toploader 4 speed if we can find one under $800!
