Default MSD 6A + Carb Question

As far as all the splicing goes, we use the two 8 pin connectors near the brake booster to splice into the ignition box right? Im using a msd 6a which has an orange "to positive coil" and a black "to negative coil" wire, the person i bought the car from had both the black and orange to the negative and the full red wire to the positive side. It ran but the tach didnt work, and when i rewired it where the orange went to the positive side and the black to the negative with the full read to the tach theres no spark. i need help..

BTW I only have the green rectangular 8 pin connector near where the eec goes does this effect the carb swap. None of my lights work, is this because theres no ecu in the car?
