Modified Macferson strut vs. coilover
I've asked alot of times, but I still can't decide. What are the downfalls of the modified macfearson strut design that is used in sn95 mustangs? I want to know what I can't make up for my upgrading my springs and shocks. What is going to be the big differance in the handling. I enjoy doing canyon running, and for that, I need stiff high speed handling with good traction for acceleration and high G turns. What is going to be the big differance in my performance if I get coilovers, over new springs and shocks for my car. If I get coilovers, aside from comfort, what will I gain? I don't care much about comfort, more about hitting those corners as fast as possible and having my body stay flat and level so I can tear it up with my friend's WRX's and 350Z's.
The modified Macpherson strut just means that the spring is separated from the strut... and located on the inside of the control arm. In terms of performance, it is not the best because you will require very stiff spring rates to make the car perform well. At the same time you increase the spring rates ride quality diminishes because of the Macpherson Strut.
With Coil-Overs, you can vastly increase your spring/wheel rates but still keep the ride comfortable... You do not need such high spring rates either to acheive the same/better level of performance. In addition you will gain height adjustability AND less unsprung weight in the front end. The ligher your suspension components, the better overall handling you will have.
Sincerely,
