Default Killed a Probe today...Why???

Some moron in a Probe GT tried to run with me today. What was he thinking.

Did they even make a probe in a GT version? Maybe he just put some logos on the car to be cool. I never paid that much attention to probes.

Anyway,

We are both merging onto one hwy from another and I am behind him on the ramp. As the ramp meets the hwy I see all lanes are clear so i cut across to the fast lane. As I am doing this I see the guy look at me and just gun it for all she's worth.

It appears to me that he is trying to get in the lane I am heading for and get in front of me. He really thought he could outrun me.

I am in 3rd and I hammer it . I can hear his motor whining like it's ready to blow.

Needless to say I hadn't even left 3rd yet and he is about 3-4 car lengths behind me. I drop it into 4th and put some serious space between us just in case he wants to do a flyby.

He eventually got closer after I backed off the gas and slowed to the speed llimit. He hung back though and never got close enough that I could make eye contact with him.

My girlfriends just laughed and she hates that type of thing.

Actually, that was to be the destiny of our Mustang's, Ford had every intention of using the Probe as the Mustang replacement, thankfully the Mustang faithful wrote enough letters telling Ford to go ahead, see how many actually buy it, no way no how it would sell like a real Mustang would.

As for the Probe GT, prior to the use of the V6 they made turbo 4 poppers which actually moved out pretty well, low 15's were prety easy in them. Not too bad, I dated a girl who had one back then, they were fun to drive, but clearly not competition for the Mustang.

I bought a Probe GT brand new back in 1989. They had 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, adjustable suspension, speed sensitive steering and an intercooled turbo, very cutting edge for it's day, especially for the price. As I recall, the turbo 4's made 145hp and 190 ft-lbs of torque, enough to run low 15's with a good driver. And the '89 Probe GT was a fine looking car, especially by the standards of the day. I put over 100,000 miles on mine with only a new clutch and starter needed the entire time I owned the car. Excellent car through and through...

Probably the last street race I ever ran was around 1989 against my then girlfriend in her 5spd 88 Mustang GT. I blew her away on the launch as she spun hard, but by the moment I hit 80mph she flew by me like I was sitting still!

1989 was the first year for the Probe and it was the first new car I ever test drove ( I was 18 at the time) and the styling was so cutting edge. There was a sister car out at the time and I'm pretty sure it was the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Ford Probes were badass and would handle most other N/A 6 cylinders of their time.

The new generation Probe GT's(1992??? and later) produced 164 hp and 160 lb-ft. Its sister car was the Mazda MX6.
I owned a manual 1994 Probe GT, and it was decently quick for a N/A V6 at that time with a 0-60 in the low 7's, and the 1/4 in the low 15's. But I understand that it could get into the 12's for the 1/4 with power mods.
However, its strong point was its handling prowess. It went around curves at high speeds like it was on rails due to its light weight of approx. 2900 lbs., bolstered suspension, wheel location at the far front and far rear, and high performance tires. In fact, I once stayed with a C5 Vette in some twistys before he blew me into the weeds at the 1st straight away.
And it was the most reliable car that I ever owned(11 years/70K miles).
