Default SS Cobalt

Well lets just say my first encounter with an SS cobalt was filled with massive stupidity. Well i am headed out to my girlfriends house at about 8:00 last night when i see some wierd lookin headlights comin up behind me. What ever is was just starts ridin my *** like it wants me to move cause their vehicle is far superior to mine. It finally whips out around me making me realize it is the imfamous SS Cobalt. This goofy as lookin white kid that looks like the kid on the cover of mad magazine looks over at me and starts revving the SH$% out of his little engine. I can hear that little super charger just sqealin as its bouncin off the redline. I look ahead to see the light infront of us turning red(MUHAAHAA). So the kid pulls up beside me and is just smilin at me like a kid thats had way to much coke to drink so he can stay up all night to see santa claus. Just by looking at this kid and his car i some how got the feeling this kid was fairly new at the whole driving thing. I saw his boost gauge and asked him "Hey bro did you do a pulley swap or some kind of mods." He comes back with this "Yeah man i have done that" then i ask "How many PSI are you running through that super charger?" He says "Yeah I am running 25 psi."
I look at him real puzzled and say "Really! Did you do any internal engine work to handle all that PSI?" he says "No man thats what a blow off valve is for dude." So the light turns green and i am just cruisin along cause he hasnt made anymore racing gestures thats when he comes back up beside me at like 50 and he drops it into first, his front tires lock up and start sqealin trying to compensate for the stupid gear change at that speed. And i can hear him just grinding gears trying to get it to start going again. We get up to the next stoplight and he says "Did you hear that blow off valve?" I said "Man you need to be careful downshifting like that you can rip the tranny right off your car doing stuff like that." He says "No it wont i got urethane transmission mounts." He then goes on to say "Dude do you wanna race me, and try to keep up." I ask him "How many horse power are you putting down." He says "Dude man i am putting down 400 HP to the wheels." I ask him "Did you get it dyno'd?" He says "No whats that?" So me being rather skeptical accept his challenge. So the light turns green and i floor it, i pull a car off the line and just keep pullin as i am slamming the gears. By the time i let off he is about 7 cars behind me. He comes up beside me and says "Hey man i couldnt get any traction can we race from a roll?" I say "Sure why not." So we start going, we get up to fourty and he does his three honks and we gun it. This is when i discover that all this SS Cobalt has is an aftermarket boost gauge. I start to pull so hard on this kid i almost felt sorry for him. By the time I let off he was again more than 5 cars behind me. He gets up beside me again at a stop sign and says " Damn dude that mustang is fast." And i say "Thanks man, learn how to drive that thing and do some more work on it and you can be fast too." He just keeps starin at my car as we leave the stop sign, and he turns off at a gas station.

The Eaton M60 supercharger is not capable of producing 25psi of boost. The only Cobalt SS's / Ion Redline's to come close to 400hp have been with both turbo and supercharger setups. Also, I thought you couldn't have a blow off valve on a roots supercharger. Those Cobalt SS's are good for low-mid 14's stock, maybe with some boltons high 13's. It's pretty hard to launch those Cobalt SS's, they have a ton of wheel hop and its even worse if you don't have the G85 option with limited slip.

The factory stage 1 upgrade puts it at around 240hp, I've seen 3rd party upgrade kits that get it to around 260hp. 300hp is possible, but probobly not 400 with just a pulley and bolt ons. You'd need a shot of nitrous or a turbo for that.

I was looking at buying one and I remember the salesmen saying "you'll be whooping on Mustang's all day with this".

See, the SRT4 and Cobalt SS and S2000 and all that are very nice cars for what they are (S2K stands above for build quality etc.) but it is asshats that give them a bad rep. I feel sorry for that kid. Sad. Good kill I guess, more of an object lesson on being an asshat and what it can do to your pride for him really.

You feel sorry for the kid? I feel sorry for the car and anybody else who would ever buy one of those used. Pocket rocket cars like that are almost always trashed by young people who own them.

picking fights that you cant win rarely stops at a redlight...not a good life-pattern.

That kid sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Hopefully he doesn't take anyone else out besides himself. It's a shame his tranny didn't come apart when he dropped it into 1st at 50 mph.
