either way, a good driver can usually run faster with a manual over a slushbox

But whos to say an Auto with a stall wont stomp a manual? I have ran both, and the clutch feels faster most of the time, but you get a well working auto and there is alot less to worry about. Clutches are more violent, but not always faster. In a really slow car it makes a difference, with some power its a much smaller gap or nonexsistent.
Lets get a few more things straight here. I'm a previous fbody owner and some of the things you guys are saying are very untrue. A '94 LT1 auto stock is pretty much a dog. There is no way at all that one will run a low 14. They are high 14 second cars around 14.7-14.9. The M6 however, if you are a very good driver, stock the best i've seen one ever run is a 14.0. With exhaust and induction you can see high 13s maybee.

....A 93-94 LT1 Z28/Trans AM...run the quarter on average 14.0 automatic's in some cases are quicker than the M6's....Now if one was to race a 99+ GT it would be a drivers race up until 100 mph...anything after that the LT1 has a huge advantage...The LT1's are more than 10 seconds quicker to 130 mph than 99+ GT and it's even quicker than the SRT-4, EVO-8 and the STI to 130 mph....To sum this all up...the LT1's are no punks and a 87-93 Mustang without some type of power adder will catch hell trying to beat one....I had heads, GT-40 upper and lower intake, cam, gearing and exhaust and got beat about 2 cars in the quarter and he straight up smoke me on top end...It wasn't even close. I'm a blue oval guy to the heart...BUT it will take one highly modded 87-93 GT to be able to stay with one of those cars. I know from experience.
Stock, the M6s are going to be faster then the autos no matter what. Every year except for '93 they had 3.42 gears in the rears. It depends on which type of auto you find. Auto's from '95-'97 either came with 2.73s, 3.23s, or 3.42s.
