well i dont know much about the s197's but ill tell you how i race my auto. from a dig i upshift it. i start it off in first, i keep the rpms at 0 cuz if i dont my tires will spin even with traction bars and drags. ill redline it then up to second, then redline and up to D. from a roll, if i dump on the pedal it downshifts on its own because i have a kickdown cable. but becareful, im not sure how the s197s trannys are built, but i had to build my tranny before racing it like this, because if done incorrectly, you could be in alot of trouble. some things i did to the tranny first was kevlar bands and clutches, modified valve body, tranny cooler and changed out the stock shifter to ahurst ratchet shifter. just some stuff to think about, hope this helps.

i think what im getting at here is build your tans a little before you start beating on it

1. Overdrive or drive doesn't matter when racing, overdrive simply allows it to shift into top gear on the highway. ET is unaffected.
2. Launch at the highest RPM you can while still maintaining traction. If you have the stock torque converter then you can't stall it very high anyway. Don't try to manually shift it.
And don't do roll races. Just...don't.

It's unAmerican, but might be acceptable overseas.
