Default Raced a BMW 540

On the interstate going home this afternoon, I moved over to the left lane to let merging traffic in. One of the cars was a BMW 540, the year was ~ '00 to '02, not real sure. Anyways, I noticed he had all the windows down and looked to be a teenager, andas I go by he jumps into the left lane catches up to me and rides my bumper at like 75 mph. So, with this I kinda had the feeling he wanted to race. We both get off at the same exit, the first traffic light we see is red, he is in the left lane, and Ipull up to his right. I looked over at him and he doesn't even give me a look, so I think to myself, if he punches it once it goes green,ITS ON! Low and behold, once the light changed, he nails it first, jumping a fender ahead before could hit it. Once I hit it, I start pulling on him hard, then I hit second and just started pulling away, then I let off due to traffic, and I'm a good 3-4 carlengths ahead.

I did notice that when the race started that he had a manual tranny in it. Does anyone know what kind of motor came in the BMW's those years w/a stick? The Beemer was suprisingly quick, thats why I'm curious.

My ride is a '00 GT (AUTO[:'(])w/full length headers, off road H-pipe, welded in flows, and a Procharger P1SC @ 10 lbs. Almost forgot, I'm running 3.55 gears out back. Sorry for such a long post but I've never described a race before online (don't do much of it). Do you guys think I should of won, or lost?

E39 540i's were only made up until 2000. They had 4.4L 32V V8's and only came in automatic. They had about 286hp and 325lbft. They did 0-60 in mid 5's. The newer E60 M5's and M6's have the V10 in them.

Maybe it was an M5.

Dang, a V8? I thought maybe a beefed up inline 6. Guess I better do a little research next time or risk getting dusted.

I'd say you only need to worry about BMW M cars.

It didn't have M5 badges, but a friend of mine has a 7 series with an M5 package, its a late ninety's early '00.That thing is wild b/c it looks like a bone stock 7 series w/nice wheels on the outside, but once you hop in, it has M5 badges inside, with a six spd I think, and the M5 motor. I don't know ifhe special ordered it or not, but maybe the guy I raced had the samekinda deal.

Actually the regular 5 & 7 series aren't to shabby. Take either lightly and you might be in trouble. Espically if your in something older than an 05.

+1, I was suprised I didn't just leave him. When I bought my car I didn't know much about stangs, then I found out about my 2v and how they don't respond well to mods as other 4v stangs and LS1 cars do[>:] Oh well, you live and learn I guess.

The e39 540 was actually produced through 2003 and in 2001 they changed the horsepower from 286 to295. These cars were underated, some have been dynoed 270 rwh.in 2003 they came with the M5 body, but had the single exhaust in the rear. I had a 2001 with a 6sp.all years could be had with a stick. I ran 13.8 @101 at atco bone stock!!!Its been said that1997 through2000 were the faster models, because of something with the intake. I think it called Vanos or somethinglike that. I'm a little rusty, haven't delt with the BMWs ina few years. Anyway, Good kill!!
