What kind of race? If it is 0-100+ My vote goes to the LT1. The LT1's of that year even with crappy gears (I had a 95 with 2.73's) were still pretty potent. Mine would pull 99+ GT's no sweat unless they caught me at a bad speed for downshifting.

Headers and gears will help you, but he should put down around 240rwhp and a good deal more tq and he weighs less I would imagine.
I think he will edge you out. He will only have to have 1 shift and the 4L60E is a good tranny. The LT1's low-end tq will more than make up for his 2.73 gears and he can hold 2nd gear almost until 90. You guys will probably be trapping in the 70's in the 1/8th mile. Like I said, I think he will edge you out slightly, but after the first 1/8th mile the victory margin will greatly increase.
I think the LT1 will have the upper hand. My buddy has a LT1 2.73 auto T/A and from a slow roll or a dig it is a real stout car. Back when my car was stock running 9.3's@74-75 from a 20 roll he would get me by about 2 cars or so. I'm on my friends name but I have a 87 t-topgt. Now it runs 8.87@81.1, But the race could be close though

20mph is a GREAT spot for the 2.73's. I loved a 20mph punch when i had my old lt1.

how many miles is on the maro? has it been beaten on or is it in good shape?

My car used no oil. The tranny had been rebuild and the last owner snapped an axle. It wasn't "babied". I did 300 mile oil change intervals for 2000 miles and got pudding out of the filter the first 2-3 times. This car was ridden hard and put away wet.
It still never used oil, smoked, anything of the nature. GM may put a POS rear end in their cars, but the rest of the powertrain seems to either run, or blow up. There is no middle ground. The only time I have seen middle ground has been EXTREME mileage or abuse.
On the LS1 board I asked for "high mileage" dynos one time. I got answers from 90-130K miles ranging from 290-310rwhp.
Same as when new.
If his LT1 has been maintained decently and his Opti-spark isn't crap, I dont see this going well for you.
FYI, LT1's dont like to be cammed after they get into the higher miles, but I have seen people cam LS1's with 120K+ on the odo and still running strong at 140K+.
