Matching revs
Engine and tranny is what he is referring to I believe. The only time they are not matched is when you press in the clutch while still rolling. So all it takes is pratice. If you're going from fifth to third just rev the engine above the rpms you left off in and slowly release the clutch. Thats about the best I can explain. I can do it perfectly but putting it into words is a little harder. Its just a matter of knowing all the rpms at every speed (usually measured in 10's) in every gear.
if your in 5th going 50mpg revving 2000 rpm, and you want to shift to 3rd and you are going to be revving say 4000 in 3rd if you were to do that, then when u push the clutch it to shift, rev up to 4000 before letting the clutch out into 3rd

that is the simplest way to explain it. you dont have to exactly match, but the r you get, the better. it allows for smooth transfer of power and keeps the tires flom locking up.
