Track/gear question.
As my sig says, I don't have a 4th gear.
I'm still wanting to go to the Lapeer track meet this Saturday though, so I have a question for you guys.
The car has 3.73 gears and normally I have to go into 4th for just a little bit. Is there some way to figure out what RPM I would be at in 3rd if I just kept it in there longer than normal? I figure I'd redline, but only very shortly...Does that question even make sense? Lol.
I seem to recall there being a formula or something that you could use, but don't remember anything else...Thanks guys.

I figured if anyone would know, it'd be one of the S/S veterans.
If it was up to me, I'd be there no matter what, even if it was just to run the 1/8th. I just want to figure out if I can do the whole run in 3rd before I talk to my dad about it.

There are plenty of Gear Calculators where you type in:
Car
Tire Size
Gears
Tranny
and it tells yah everything you need to know. Im not sure how accurate they are.

The highest I trapped ever is 106, but same difference. I didn't think about that idea, thanks!
try using this csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html - add the http://www. to the front of the link. The last one on that page will allow you to figure what rpm you are at in 3rd gear. You need to know your gear ratio (3.73) , height of your tires, what mph you will complete the 1/4 at (remember, trap speed on the slip is the average speed for the last 66 ft of the track, so you are passing the line at a faster speed than your trap speed), and the ratio of the gear you will be in when you finish (final gear ratio)- this would be the 3rd gear ratio for you, so you will have to look it up (4th gear = 1.0, 3rd will be some higher number). The MPH might be hard to figure out if you have never gotten a clean run in the quater with 4th gear intact.
That is a quick and easy way to figure it out, but you will need to be able to go a couple of mph faster than 104 in third since trap speed is the average of the last 66 feet of the 1/4 mile, meaning you are passing the finish line at a faster speed than you trap.
