Actually, there were both automatic AND stick-shift SSP's. The California Highway Patrol SSP's were all stick shifts, while other departments would order them with either transmission based upon their needs.

Great find. I'd love to have the extra money to find a fox and start a project car for the track.

Bill, thats a good start. Next time you're out in the garage...Crank about 28* of timing into that thing, and leave the spout out. Give it a whirl. If it doesn't ping, try it at 30* and so on, I've seen some of those cars run with 38* and no issues. I think you'll be surprised what that will do for you at the track.

Nice old school trick. I ran 25 advance on my 86 all the time.

Not bad at all, OP. Looks like you're running a close to stock 5.0 with the exception of some handing mods. Car looks good, man! Keep up the good work!

I assume that I'd need to run 93 octane for that, right?

Thanks for the positive comments. Other than exhaust and having an 8.8" with tall gears and t-lok (versus the stock 7.5"), the drivetrain is stock. I'm told the clutch is a Centerforce installed some time ago, but it feels soft to me. Like I said, it's a baseline test. I would have liked to have done more runs. I didn't spin - I took it easy and feathered the clutch slowly. I'm going to a private track rental at MIR on Monday 10/19, so I'll get plenty of runs in. Hope the car stays together for the 2 hour ride home.

Yes, I would run premium in it, with the timing advanced that far. You could probably get away with midgrade, but why risk it?

If you look around at some of the guys that toy with a stock motor, they have enough tricks that you can stay entertained with a lightly modded 5L.

Feel free to ask any questions you have.
