You're cool. That's not a sports car, it's a near-luxury sedan. I had a chipped jetta, and yeah it was quick, but who the hell cares about beating a v6 mustang? whoopty freakin doo.
My 91 5.0, which was totalled and rebuilt, then stolen and partially stripped and rebuilt again, has been more reliable than my Jetta, which was a 2002 that I got from a friend with about 20k miles on it.
Here are the common VAG problems to date that you might experience:
Stereo - the OEM stereos tend to crash, and you have to pull the fuse in order to turn them back on. It's common, so common in fact that the dealer had them in stock to replace mine.
Heated seats - there have been reports of the heat seaters burning the seats.
Ignition coils - known recall on the coils because they fail, leaving you running on 3 cylinders.
brake light switch - known recall for the brake light switch failing - not only will your brake lights not work, but your cruise control may not turn off when you hit the brakes.
And if your Audi has the same turn-key-to-roll-down-windows feature, it also means that anybody with a large screwdriver can insert it into your driver's door lock, turn it (busting the lock cylinder to the tune of about $300 in parts), and roll down your windows, disabling the alarm and unlocking the doors. Want to keep your existing keys? Then you get to send your door lock to the factory to get it keyed to your existing keys. Otherwise you get new keys, which cost around $200 each.
I'm not a huge believer in American quality, they just happen to have what I want - specifically a 5.0 to drop into a cobra kit or a miata, a mid-sized v8 pickup with more room than my Jetta had, and a heavy duty truck capable of loading over 7000 lbs of junk into the bed without straining it. If a foreign make had something that fit the bill, I would have been perfectly happy going with a Japanese counterpart. VAG ranks right up there with the American cars in my book. They used to make good looking cars too, but the new redesigned ones suck.
So I tell you what, if you think you can keep up with my 5.0, give it a shot. It's not luxurious at all, but it's a hell of a lot quicker than your Audi. Even my Dakota is faster than a 1.8t Bug, and that's a halfton 4x4.

He's not lying about the chip gains guys. Well it's only a chip if the vehicle is old. If it's newer then it's just an ECU reflash. The ECU on the 1.8t's controls boost. Stock is about 10psi and with the chip it gets bumped up to 14.7psi or thereabouts. The turbo is about the size of my ******* though, so top end gains are pathetic, but the low-end and midrange gains are phenominal. The thing hits full boost at about 2000rpm.
that stock turbocharger can easily be swapped-out with a few different larger ones that can pu you anywhere from 250-350 HP on that same engine (a 1.8 turbocharged 4-cyl)
now when you factor in the bi-turbochaged V6 and swapping out BOTH of those turbos.......
500 hp is NOT out of the question.........
how about the 1/4 mile in 11.93 ??????
