quicker shifts
I just threw in my tri-ax shifter on my Fox. I can shift pretty good, but I haven't ever ttried shifting different ways. I'm most interested in knowing if it is safe to shift without taking your foot off the gas. Is there a certain way to do it? It is real rough on the transmition?
if youre good enough, yeah, you can stay on the gas. but, me i prefer to shift the normal way(let off gas, push clutch, shift, let clutch out, floor gas pedal), just a lot faster. cuz if you mess up, you can screw up 2 things...1) your engine by overrevving it and blowing it, or 2) your tranny. id like to keep the vital components of my car in one piece.....but hey, thats just my opinion
I agree with Grn... powershifting is probably not going to prolong the life of your tranny if you're not good at it, but practice makes perfect hehe. It's ESPECIALLY not good if you ever own an AWD car. What I'll do sometimes, although I'm usually too scared to practice it, is let out the gas to about 50-60% throttle while I'm pressing in the clutch, shift, then mash the gas again. This seems to put more pressure on the clutch, which I'm more comfortable with, than the transmission. If you do it right you can get a much smoother, faster shift.
Don't take what I say at face value though. I'm really really hard on my car hah

nothing fun or fast is good for your car, but it is fun and fast. if you don't want to hurt your car don't race it. if you want to race it, make it worth your while in my opinion. beat the crap outa it at the track and get your times, take it easy on the street unless theres a grudge with the person you're racing.
don't go from slow shifts to trying to power shift, you WILL miss. gradually when you decide to "get on it" start to shift faster and faster releasing the gas pedal. eventually you will get quick enough and know the shift pattern well enough that you should not honestly have a difference in shift time between a quick regular shift and a power shift. in which case staying in the gas between shifts will not help unless you are turboed or in a gear that will not spin the tires if you full throttle shift and engage the next gear.
for me in my weak 1995 Altima I will spin tire into second with even a quick regular shift so I have to slip the clutch ever so slightly (nobody else would even notice) when I shift into second. Into third no matter how fast or how hard I shift (powershift) I will not spin the tire and it will only help so I powershift the hell out of third gear.
Most likely your car will spin tire into third and powershifting wont really help, powershifting into 4th might a little and only at the track not on the street. It also makes a hell of an awesome feeling shifting that quick into the next gear... Really puts you in your seat with a good clutch in comparison to regular granny shifts.. One of the reasons some of my friends think my car is faster than it is after riding in it is strictly due to hardcore shifts into third gear with my performance clutch grabbing like all hell and jerking the car forward.

pffff, ******, powershift the hell out of it! if you cant powershift.. you cant drive good enough to race in my opinion.
when powershifting you should be so fast with the shift say u shift at 5500, u should only be revving like 5800 when u let the clutch out in the next gear.

Ya but you can do even better if you do. I would start out powershifting by letting off the gas just alittle and start your shift at a lower rpm like 3500-4000 so if oyu do miss you can catch it before you pass your redline. Its a good way to practice. slamm your foot to the floor, shift, and put foot up all really fast. then do it with your foot to the floor, i have done it a lot in my car and yes i have missed a shift but nothing has happend to my car,you can react fast enough when you see or hear your engine rev. to high to let off the gas. then you can get better. Powershifting is good because you lose time when letting off the gas(not much at all but when racing you look for every .01 of a second) When you get it down shift about 4-500 rpms over your peek hp so when you shift the engine rpm will be at your top hp.
yes you can powershift it to save a few tenths. i personally don't don't powershift becasue i just don't think that extra few tenths is worth the risk. I do shift it very hard and fast but i do let off the gas for a split second when i do it.

just the exact opposite.........i can drive good enough where i dont need to powershift. never have. won MANY races. won more than what ive lost, and when i did lose, it was from the launch where i messed up........so, you dont NEED to be able to powershift.

A good driver power shifting the car will always be faster, but then again I look at things a bit different. What good is putting all the time and effort into racing a car and building it, only to leave .2 tenths on the table by not driving it hard. FWIW *I* have never ever hurt a car by power shifting and I race alot.
