so im guessing his corolla is a xrs? those still only run like a high 15 stock. It's pretty funny that he wanted to race you though.

I'm sure he raced a Corolla S, because the XRS has the VVTL-i engine, not the VVTi.

XRS's are about equivalent to the Celica GTS, tad bit slower supposedly. I honestly have no idea because I haven't seen any run at all. But I'd think a 170 hp 6 sp car would be fairly decent.

I don't see any problem with giving out handicaps. I mean, the giving of handicaps has already established that the cars aren't equal, so then you're just trying to even the race up. I love it when at the end of the quarter, you're neck and neck, it's just awesome...

It's not a race if you have to give him 5 lengths! It's that same stupid sh*t they do on Pinks. Why did he even want to race you if he didn't want to line it up?
GAY!
But good kill, I guess

Giving headstarts in units of time is dumb, no offense intended. Someone's car would have to be horribly slow for you to give 'em a 3 second head start. If you have a stock '98 Mustang GT M5 and you gave a '88 Oldsmobile Cierra (really, old looking grandma car) a 3 second head start, it might beat you. There are very few ways to give out handicaps, or headstarts:
1. The break: You line up, dead even and wait for the other guy to launch. As soon as you hear or see him launch, you go.
2. Lengths: There are a couple of ways to give lengths; you have heads-up and break lengths, or you have rolling lenghts. Heads-up and break lengths are where the other car drives a certain distance in front of you(say two cars) and you either give him the break or both go at the same time on a signal. That way, he already has two car lengths on you, a considerable difference for evenly matched cars. Just remember though, his car needs to run the ENTIRE length of the quarter; you'll be running the quarter plus two cars...
3. Rolling lengths: You line up at the quarter mile mark, and your opponent backs up (say 3 car lengths) and takes off whenever he wants. You do not leave until he is beside you. That way, you're both kinda leaving at the same time, but he is already going faster than you...
Never give headstarts in the terms of seconds... NEVER

I generally only give handicaps to my friends, when we're just fucking around. I have a bud here at school with a '96GT M5 with just an exhaust (but boy does it sound mean) who thinks he can take me--we're suppossed to race today--and I'm not going to burn the living hell out of him. One of my best friends has a Mitsu 3000GT VR4 and heads up he's only about two cars behind me, so when I give him a car and a half and the break, I have to drive PERFECT to beat him, which helps me get better.
Basically, if you have the ***** to race someone, have the ***** to do it the right way. Some ******* in a Neon wanted a 3 length head start, so I just told him he's wasting my time and he should go find a stock Festiva to race or something.
If you win a race after having a 5 length head start, you do NOT have bragging rights.
