First time Mustang owner here. Just bought a 66 mustang, which was someone else's project... So, what they had done is cut out the shock towers and welded diamond plate to it and looks like from what I am being told welded a sn95 mustang k member in there. Unfortunately they look like the welds aren't the greatest, like a 5byear old went wild with a stick welder and I am not exactly excited about diamond plate. I am also interested in upgrading the handling and lowering the car some (not slam, but lower) for improved handling. My other plans are I have a 5.0 and 5 speed manual from a 88 mustang I will be swapping in there as this car did not come with motor or tranny.
I have been seeing various aftermarket setups and curious which was would be best for my goals. I am up for suggestions. Thanks
Ouch that looks like crap. You are most likely going to need to find a setup that replaces that portion of the frame rails which will probably be $2k+ for everything for a modern coil over setup. Other option, and most affordable, is to return to stock suspension. With that option you will need to replace the frame rails and shock towers, but thankfully those are reproduced and most parts suppliers would have them available.
You could install a Mustang II double A arm front suspension. That also eliminates the shock towers. Without the shock towers obviously you have a ton more room for engine/exhaust ect. The diamond plate has got to go. If you can weld, then the cost to fix this mess is a lot cheaper than if you have to pay someone else to do the work.
