Might buy a SVO....whats up with them
Ok so my motor is f**ked up in my 98 GT. I'm selling my Jeep Wranger because I need something that gets good gas milage on the highway. I came across this SVO on auto trader. What are the common problems with these cars, whats should I look for. How slow are they lol. And how good are they for turnpike driving and what gas mileage should I expect out of them. Its a 1986 SVO 5 speed, 128,000 miles. They are asking 2,400.
Make sure all of the SVO specific parts are intact, because replacing them can get expensive. The fan control under the dash can go bad and there have been some fires caused by them. Of course the car is ~20 years old, so wiring may be getting kinda worn, so check it out.
As for how slow they are, the 86 was rated at 200 hp, only 25 behind a stock 98 GT. Granted the torquecurve is different, so they will drive much differently. 1/4 times were between 14.9 and 15.1. A few cheap mods will get you deep into the 14's, and I have beat more GT's of allgenerations than I can count with my silver SVO.
Mileage should be easily mid-upper 20's in good tune. Keeping it under ~3100 rpm will improve the mileage. Suspension can be pretty stiff, but for the turnpike you shouldn't really notice too much. $2,400 is a good price as long as SVO specific pieces are there, and the paint is decent with that many miles.
EDIT: I looked it up on line but no pics. The car has probably been repainted, because if it is a true Shadow Blue car it is incredibly rare.
