Default 1985 GT vs SVO

OK SVO guys - educate me, try to sway me I have always wanted an '85 GT to add to my stable, but have recently come across an 85 SVO with only 66k original miles that seems to be at a fair price. It is pure red, not the darker metallic red and from pics and description it appears to be a fair weather, mint car. The headlights are sunk in, so I think that makes it an 85, not 85.5. Is there a major difference in the 85 and 85.5's - performance? value? etc?

I want an 85 for collectors/show purpose, not to race or mod up. So I am looking for you SVO folks to convince me on why I should go SVO. Are they easy to work on and find parts should something minor go wrong? And what is a good value for this car - is $7k fair ???

Any input would be appreciated, because I have really go the itch to find me an '85 before the 2006 show season rolls around. Not sure why, I guess so I can really go broke [8D]

The pre 85.5 cars were non-intercooled and made less horsepower. I've never owned an SVO but a friend of mine did back when they were new (yes I'm old). I actually passed on an '86 with less than 9k miles about 6 yrs. ago for 8 grand and am still kicking myself over that one. They are awesome cars. With the ricers as strong as they are these days I'm surprised Ford hasn't come back with a turbo 4. I'm sure someone else on here could tell you more about performance vs. the GT. It seems like I read back when they were new that Ford was more going after the Porsche 944(popular car back then as well) market with the SVO and the F-body cars with the GTs. SVOs had 16inch wheels. Upgraded buckets. Extra wing etc... Ford also had a brand that went by the name of Merkur at the time. A lot of the same tech went into those cars (especially the XR4ti) as I recall.

all svo were intercolled i had a very early 84 that didnt even have the quad shocks(very early) the svo are the best handling and balenced mustang ever only fox body to come with 5lug wheels beside the 93 corbra "r" factory rear disc they come with factory 3.73s early 84 had 3.42s everything on the car is unique and made a certain way for a reason, like the 16 inch wheels are slotted and basically smooth for areodynamic reasons the only other american car in 84 to have 16s was the vette, the main difference in 85 and 85.5/86 svo is the computer mapping and the turbo gives 1 more psi of boost and the turbo is water cooled in 85.5/86 cars the early cars were just oil cooled 84/85 the insurance is cheap compared to a v8 and everyone will definitely stare at the car because of the hood, i was beating 99-04 gt with my svo i added a waste gate valve on it to up the boost i was running around 20psi. i would look the price up on www.kbb.com to find out the value i found a 85 for 3000$ here where i live it is very clean and has 98000miles on it i might buy the guy above has never owned an svo his friend probably had a mustang turbo completely different car!!!!

Im partial to the 85 GT's, just cause I have 2 of them, one in full tear down mode and one with 18k miles. They were a parting gift for my dad when he left ford. I do like the svo's though. But if i had to choose it would be an 85. I just like the lines and the front end, very appealing to me.

dude, SVO totally. the one you are looking at has 200 HP stock. its easy to get stuff for them. not as easy as the 5oh, but still not too bad. most of the parts used on the SVOs were used on later ford models. calipers, engine, interior parts, taillights, foglights, etc. plus, you dont have to touch the suspension. its the best handling mainstream mustang ever made. (not including the "R" models). and they are worth much more than what people say. and will become more valuable as time goes on. theyre one of the forgotten stangs, yet they were awesome. the 85.5s are worth more, but not by much. the only real diff of the 85.5 is that they have 205 HP. thats about it. does this car have A/C, radio? tell us if it is missing any "normal" interior things. it might be a comp prep. if so, its worth a ton more. if not, its still an SVO. they only made a few hundred comp prep models. does it have dual exhaust? how bout the bi-spoiler? go with the SVO. it will be a smash hit at the shows and it will be wicked fun on the streets. not many people even know what an SVO is, much less have seen one, or even seen how they handle. SVO, itll be worth much more than the GT in years to come.

and PLEASE. IF YOU GUYS DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, SAY THAT YOU ARENT TOTALLY SURE. I DONT THINK IVE HEARD THIS MUCH B.S. IN A THREAD THIS SMALL BEFORE!

yes, ALL SVOs had intercoolers. its one of the main diffs between the turbo gts and the SVOs. 84 SVO had 175HP, 210TQ. 85 had 200HP and 240TQ. 85.5 had 205HP and 248TQ. 86 was same as 85. 84s had the 3.42 rears, the rest had the 3.73s. the 84s had a .63 trim turbo. the rest were .48 trim. the 84s had a high volume fuel pump, 30# injectors, diff ECU, small VAM. the rest had smaller fuel pump, 35# injectors, better ECU, bigger VAM. 84s had single, dual tip exhaust, rest had duals. 85 and up had the bi-spoiler delete option. 85.5/86 had flush headlights.

Hi all,

I ran across this thread and hopefully some of you all are still around. I'm a new member who just ****** an 85.5 recently.

SVO48180,
If you still checking the boards, I'd like to know if you have more pics of your SVO? Mine is just like yours and would like to use your pics as reference to get the car back in shape.

Thanks all.
