Default Changing brakes on 97 Cob

Ok my dad is changing his brakes. Well he can't get the rear piston to compress enough to place the new disk pads in. He's tried to bleed the brake line by removing the bleeder valve. He used a C clamp to try and compress the piston. NO GO!!! How does he get it to compress?? Thanks
