You can fit a Nitto 315 DR, but I'm not a big fan of how it looks. They don't bulge horribly, but they definitely do still bulge. 275 is the recommended size for a 9 inch rim. Any more and even if you can fit it, it's not going to look as good, and the little bit of extra width you get isn't going to really do anything for grip. The Nitto 275 DRs are just about perfect for our cars until you really start putting power down. Plus, they aren't too aggressive of a DR that you can't street drive them. One of these days I really need to get my friend to get me a pair.

Nitto 315's are narrower than some other brands. Still, more tire than I would feel comfortable with on the stock rims.

Just because they are wider doesn't mean you have more traction!!! Too wide of a tire creates a crown at the road surface, either in causing the rubbing of the sidewall from not enough pressure or out normal or too much pressure. Either way, you get LESS traction and much more wear. 295 is the absolute max on a 9"rim, but I would reccomend 275's all around so you can rotate them. Get a descent street tire so they will last you. I'm sure yu will drive more street than drag!

Also, I hate the fact that Nitto's run "smaller" than other sizes. This blatently shows you that they are not being true to actual measurements. Everyone knows that Tire manufactures aren't going to say something is smaller than what things actually are to eat money and give free to the buyer. So if Nitto's are smaller and telling the truth that means every other company out there is lying and giving bigger tires than what they measure (rubber=$$$) especially since tires prices went up 6% nationwide within the past few weeks. I hate companies that portray their stuff out to be more than what it really is. I bet their tires rated at 60kmi are only 40kmi!!! so on and so forth.

I'd be interested to see a picture of what they look like on your car. I've seen one before, they don't bulge much, but you can tell they are bigger than recommended for the rim size. 97targa expanded on what I was saying earlier (had to run out to the parents for thanksgiving), wider doesn't mean better. The 555Rs are really good tires because they are just about a perfect balance for someone who drives a car with around 400-500 RWHP on the street, but wants more traction. They'll give you enough that you shouldn't break loose much, but will last long enough to be decent for the street. I just wish they would make their sizes right. It makes me wish they had a 285 or 295 since that would be just about right on a 9" rim. I'd go for their 275s over their 315s though.

The middle number is the sidewall's height in percentage as compared to the width. So on a 295/40/17, the width is 295 mm, and the sidewall height would be 40% of that, 118 mm. You typically have little choice in that number with a certain brand of tire so it's not usually something you have to worry about. For example, using the 555r, you can get a range of widths, but for each width, they only make one sidewall size, 315/35/17, 275/40/17, etc.

i will see if i can dig up a pick of it with them on there, i have them on a second set of rims for mostly track use only and then switch em out. the rims are in the garge with them on so worst case i can get a pic of them on the rims. gimme a few minutes and i wil see what i have out there.
