Timing chain knocking
this probably sounds really bad to you guys, but from what a Ford mechanic told me, the timing chains between the cams are a little loose. well I absolutely HATE to have any sound coming from my car except exhaust. how much would this cost me to fix or how hard would it be for a novice like myself to fix?
you got more to worry about than sound if the chains are loose....they will slap on the plastic guides and chew them away, then down to the aluminum under them....metal and plastic in the oil pan ftl
ouch. well I did take it to my local Ford dealership and had a mechanic look at it, but they dont know everything I guess. so what would I be looking at here? price wise?
i dont know...my family mechanic wanted 650 plus parts to do *like 300 for parts* but my engine is sohc....so yours would prob be a little more....the ford dealership wanted like 1100 labor and 600 for parts on my car, again prob more for yours.... you sure thats what the sound is? does it always do it? mine only did it until i built up oil pressure ...but if its not fixed early it gets worse....heres a link a writeup to fix it on a sohc, also has the noise incase you wanna reference....dont let yours go as long as he did..he fixed it then it seized up from too much plastic being all over the place like a week later...

ok, well if memory serves me right, which it probably doesnt, the Ford place wanted close to 2k for everything. im sure I could find someone else to do it for cheaper, but it all depends on quality. I would rather pay more and know its done right than pay less and it possibly mess up. but thanks for the links, im gonna check into it.
You should be able to do everything yourself. Just take pics of everything so you know how it goes back together. Actually it sounds like your tensioner pullies seized up...common.... I wouldn't drive very far since it will chew up those plastic guides and if it jumps time, then your looking at a new motor because they are an interference motor if the timing jumps on them! When you take everything apart if you decide to do it yourself, just put a straight edge over the cam gears before you remove the chain and draw a black line so you can keep them aligned if anything moves, which nothing should and mark your crank gear straight up and down and mark the block in relationship to it. That's the hardest most crucial part of the whole job is to maintain the exact timing position!!! It's a whole lotta work as well!
