Yes you have to buy new heads...

Left side head
Part # 2C5Z-6049-BAB
Right side head
Part # 2C5Z-6049-CAB

Those are the part numbers for "the fixed" heads from Ford - around $1200.00 or so..

You could just get your heads freshened. The tick is probably from worn vavle guide from overheating in that chamber. When you say spend a little extra and get reworked heads, then your gonna want to upgrade cams and so forth. Your looking at $4g's

It depends on what your HP goals are with the car. I have the same problem and am replacing my headswith FRPP HiFlow heads and Hi Lift cams. It will cost a little more like 97Targa says, about $3K just for parts.Bare heads are $750 ea and the Cam Kit is about $1500.00. If you want to stay stock, you can by the 04 Cobra replacementheads.

97 - in order to really fix the tick you have to get the heads with "the fix"...

These are the "Tick Fix" heads.

2005 Revised Heads: LEFT HEAD P/N 2C5Z-6049-BAB
RIGHT HEADP/N 2C5Z-6049-CAB

I am going through the same thing right now. My car only has 8600 miles on it and it has the tick. Ford quoted me $2400.00 to replace the heads. The motor has to come out on the 4V engines so it is a big job.I could try tofind a reputable shop that will do it cheaper but I would just feel more comfortable having an SVT authorized dealership do it.

For the best deal, you can get the heads from Steve Powell at Tousley Ford. His number is 1-800-328-9552 (fordsvtparts@hotmail.com)

I agree completely. Below is the Ford Ariticle regarding the heads. No recall was ever issued.

03-11-4 ENGINE - MUSTANG COBRA - TICK NOISE FROM ENGINE - COBRA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ENGINES BUILT BEFORE 11/1/2002 ONLY

ISSUE:
Some 2003 Mustang Cobra vehicles with engines built before 11/1/2002 may exhibit an unusual engine tick noise that is present at all temperatures during idle. This noise may be due to valve guide wear in the left bank cylinder head. Guide wear manifests itself as a tick noise which can be heard at the rear of LH head, through LH catalyst, at the LH front wheel well and may not be heard with the hood open.

ACTION:
Use the diagnostic procedures listed in this article to evaluate the vehicle condition and replace the cylinder head if applicable.
