problems with 2nd and Reverse
So today, i just bought a 96 SVT Cobra red, 5 spd 70k...nice car. but today i was driving around for a while and came to an on-ramp and had to get on from a stop....quickly. so i took 1st to 4,800RPM, and in no way did i try to "speed Shift" or anything and it grinds. so i throw it in third and pretty much get down on it.
it did it to me like 3-4 times and now reverse is giving me a problem. I have a 3 Month Power Train warrenty on it. Does it cover i take it? any help would be nice, thanks.

I have this same issue with my 97 Cobra. Only mine, 2nd gear will just pop itself out and sometimes it will even stay in 2nd and the rpms will skyrocket with no speed increase. Also my reverse grinds slighty every time I engage it. I'm looking into getting a rebuilt T-45 from D&D Performance in Michigan. Then again if you have a warranty take advantage of it. I looked into swapping my T-45 and putting in a T-56 but found out you only really gain about 200-300 rpms in 6th so it's not worth the extra money to me.
Syncro's are done...warranty that thing.
Depends what T-56 you buy - There's the Cobra T-56 and the Viper T-56. The viper T-56 has a .5 6th gear vs the Cobra's .62.
The T-56 is a stronger transmission...but I'm sure the D&D version of the T-45 is decent.
I just put the viper spec T-56 into my car - 80mph at 1800 rpms and 3.55 gears...but accelerated like a dog. Swapped to 4.10's and got back to my normal acceleration and do 2100 rpms at 80 now.
If you can get them to do it - the ideal transmission would be a T-56 with the Cobra 1-4 gear ratios and the Viper 5-6 ratios.

so i took the car back to the dealership i bought it from and the people that Hold my warrenty is through a company named "c.a.r.s/cars" something of the sort.
Anyway, the only transmission shop around here certified through the companies eyes is cottman transmission. When i took the car 6 miles today from point a-b. The car grinded 2nd twice (mind you my "granny shifting" is never over 3k RPM.) and that was only half way there. So i started going 1st to 3rd and though it didnt grind, it felt weird through the shifter going into 3rd. So when i arrived there i told them that 2nd and reverse have been grinding/popping out, and even 3rd felt a little wierd. So i told them to take a look at ALL the syncro's and everything else really while they have the trans out of the car and make sure the rest is fine. The guy kinda gave me a hard time, and also said "well, C.A.R.S usually pays for used parts." so then i called my mechanic and he said its entirely wrong to re-use any syncronizer and that is completely bs.
So now not only do i not have my car, that i just bought yesterday. this tranny place put me under the impression im getting Used syncro's. unless he meant for anything else that may be wrong with the transmission. Ugh this is such a mess. Does this make sense to anyone???!!!
Thanks for all the input guys. its really a huge "house Warming" feeling coming from an X GM F-body(s) owner.

As for used parts in a transmission? I would never recommend used syncro's...I've never even heard of anybody ever doing such a thing??? See if you can get a hold of the warranty company and get a straight answer from them. Transmissions are touchy pieces. Maybe re-manufactured pieces would be ok - as long as they rank up to the OEM specs.
ok, so last tuesday was 2 weeks that cottman had my car. i get the car back and do some runnin around. about 2 hours after having it back, i once again had to get down on the gas to merge on the highway from first to second...I took it to 5,200 RPM and shifted and the car once again grinded.
Reverse feels better but it still popped out on me once or twice, for some reason its worse when i have the wheel turned to say, back into a parking spot...
I had gotten a copy of the receipt and it said $1,1XX for "general repairs"...nothing was broken down. When i took the car back, and told them what had happened, their response was "its not a race car". At this point i started yelling, and told a tech to get in the car and we are going for a drive.
Pulled out of the shop parking lot and took it to 5,500 from 1st to 2nd and it did it. but then took it to 5,500 from 2nd to 3rd and no problem. and at that point i said, ok so why does 2nd to 3rd allow that rpm and 1st to 2nd does not. and it was then he finally agreed something was still messed up..
Now he said something about the "forks" being bent? i mean i dont know alot of Transmission details but i thought there was only 1 fork? does anyone know if there could be another issue other than a synchro and a gear?
thanks guys.
