Hey everyone. I just picked up a 1997 Cobra for free. It's in pretty good running order, only thing is, it's got a CEL with a P0411. Now the car has Hooker LTH's, an offroad X-pipe and Borla cat back. Being that it has no cats on the car I figured that was what the code was for. Doing some research I found that the code was for the Secondary Air Injection system. Does this in fact has anything to do with no cats? It has all 4 O2 sensors installed on the car. I was going to pick up some MIL eliminators for the sensors so that it just fools the computer. The guys at njstangers.com tell me to check out the air diverter valve, located behind the alternator and run some tests on it, but I don't see it. Also they say the secondary smog pump may be faulty. Any other suggestions from anybody here? Thanks.

If you have a smog pump- it could cause the issue, as well as any lines running to the exhaust. The system is designed to pump fresh air into the exhaust, cooling it down and burning any unburnt fuel.

The njstangers.com seems to be on the right track. Things to check are the smog pump, diverter valve, check valve and air distribution manifold/lines. Your emissions label will have the layout for you.

 

Would the fact of the X-pipe not having any cats be an issue as well?

 

It could be, but I believe there's a separate code if there were HCs downstream. The lack of cats, makes the computer think that they aren't working properly. Putting those little 'adapters' into exhaust does alter that reading, but I think there's probably a different issue here.

Is the smog pump even there? or hooked up?

 

I'm not sure if the smog pump is there or not. I was told it was on the firewall on the driver side so I looked there and didn't see one so I will have to look in the passender front side. I know nothing about Fords, I've always been a Chevy guy, but the car was given to me for free so of course I'm not gonna say no lol. The more and more I drive it, the more and more I see why people love Ford. They really do make quality cars after all lol.

 

Most of the smog pumps that I've seen are actually little pumps driven by a belt on the front of the engine.

Yeah, I'm a 'convert' too- happened several years ago though.
