Default thunk in the trunk

Went to finalize the deal on the Cobra this a.m. and took a last demo drive before signing the papers.

Getting interstate ramp, I had to let off the gas in 5th gear, (behind someone), and then when I hit the gas again, a noticeable "thunk" from the back of the car along with a sensation of something re-engaging back there.

Had not noticed that before on my short test drive, but it repeated itself nearly everytime; let off the gas, coast for a couple of seconds between 40-60 mph, then back on the gas, and THUNK!

Took it by a Ford dealership, and rode with a mechanic. He also noticed a whine from the rear end, and said that it's not unusual that when the rear end develops a whine that things are getting sloppy in the differential, and that's probably what I'm hearing. He also said it could be something as simple as a brace that's loose.

Dealership where the car is put it in their shop, and could not find anything loose. Their stance is "it is what it is" "Do you still want it?"

Any ideas out there what it may be? I know the previous owner has the rear end gearing changed out twice, from .327 to .373, and now .410. Could that be part of the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Well i would tell the dealer to take at least $500 off sticker. The issue "could" be a loose brace, or it "could" be the diff going out.
Then when he tries to renegotiate, tell him it is what it is, and ask him if he still wants to sell it...

What is the asking price of the car?
Sounds like the differential to me..

$12K; 99 with 53K miles, it's been somewhat modded with shifter, CAI, exhaust, and .410 rear

go get an estimate on a differential from a reputable shop in your area for that car and then you will have some leverage as well, even better if they let u take the car to the shop

Did that; local Ford shop estimated it at $1600, without having the VIN number.

Ouch.

Yep, I'd say its the diff. Bet if you take it to a shop you will find alot of play in the yoke.

Yeah, kind of the way I feel, but I've negotiated them down to the point where I think they'e ready to blow me off. Either that, or they love the car to where they're happy keeping it.

Exhaust on the car is aftermarket X pipe as well. Nothing wrong with that, and I love a deep, loud exhaust, but it's almost like it's hard welded to the frame the way it sounds when accelerating. It just drones, and that's another item I would need to deal with.

Well, guys, I have to say goodbye, but only moving to the 5.0 section.

Could not resolve with the dealer the noise issue, and combined with this car being heavily modded (which is good to some) I had to walk away.

Coincidentally, found a '94 GT Vert in NC, and made a deal on that yesterday, and brought her home. 100% stock, 80K what appears to be babied miles, and of course a lot less money than the Cobra would have been.

My search was for either a '94 - '04 Cobra vert or a '94-'95 GT Vert (to get the 5.0)

Very cool cars all!
