I have never done it but my buddy did a lot of his own porting on his 01 gtp. I believe he said it was pretty easy and he found some good "How To" vids thru google and on youtube. I would check their.

Cobra heads are very picky. Im no pro but I have several valid points for you to consider. Is the engine going to be N/A or boosted? What rpm Range will it be opperating in?What gears will be in the rear axle? Will it be high compression?what camshafts will be used? These are all extremely important things to consider because with cobra heads it is just as likely that you will do more harm then good. The volume of the ports in most cobra heads is more than enough for our 4.6's that dont rev to the moon. Its all about air velocity You need a smooth transition through the entire port. From what I have heard and read about 4v heads the majority of the work should be done in the bowl area to fix up the Brutal short turn radius to the valves. I will try and copy on some of the x rays of the ports from Sean hylands book. If you have never ported before than you should get a set of practice 2v heads to work on. Remember if the pros mess up your heads they have to buy you new ones, if you mess up your SOL.It would be cheaper to have heads ported for $600 at your local machine shop then to buy new heads again.I really hope this helps and ill try and get the xrays for you tomorrow.

Most charge $3k+ to port and polish 4v heads. I think you can get alot of gain and little risk if you just polish the heads yourself. I have heard two opinions, 1) just hog that bitch out and there is no black magic to it and 2) it requires a strong connection to the force, and you should just give Yoda 3 grand.

You need to browse local machine shops not patriot mmr and shm . Buy the labor not the brand name. My quote was 700

i wouldnt practice even on 2v head for the first time, i would just find a junk 4cyl alum 4 valve head to practice on, much cheaper to learn on first and get a feel for your grinding tools. if you do just a gasket match port you should be fine and get some nice gains over stock, anymore radical of a port and i would say leave it to the pros, also re do the seats on the valves while you have everything apart. porting is an art so practice, practice. also, look at pics of ported heads to see where they do most the porting to give you an idea and bigger is not always better on ports but you should already know that. sean hyland does have some good pics of port heads in his book, go check it out at a barns and noble or other book store. good luck.
