School me on a '97 Cobra
I'm interested in buying a black '97 Cobra I see on autotrader. Questions are, what are the stock gears (its a manual)? Is the 4v 4.6 in this Cobra significantly quicker than the 2v in GT's? Are the stock headers welded to the stock H Pipe or is that just a clamp type deal? Lastly, I own a '95 Firebird Formula 350 LT1 with a couple of boltons. Would the Cobra in stock form be comparable in power and such? I dont want to downgrade myself in that way and I do not plan on doing many mods. Reason I am asking is that I have kicked the crap outta several GT's in my Bird but i have never raced a Cobra.

i can't really tell you that the cobra is faster, it is probably a driver's race, but the 97 cobra is significantly faster than the GT's. The 4.6 DOHC Cobra is rated at 305 hp when the GT's are around 215/225.

RE: School me on a '97 Cobra
hey there,
I am the proud owner of a 97 cobra. Previously I had a 94 GT (that has a 5.0) that I had bolted on to like mad. The '97 is a far superior car. The motor is hand built and like an exotic, handles high revs putting out great hp on strait motor. A friend of mine owns a ram air firebird with the 350 engine and I can tell you that the cobra is all of that and more. You should test drive it, take it on a long trip, get to know it, and I think that you will find that it is one of the most practical and comfortable sports cars out there. One more off the topic comment is that the engineering is top notch making it one hell of a reliable vehicle, it is almost bullet proof. Oh, and the gas milage is good at 25 to 27 mpg on the freeway.
the info you want...
it has a 3.27 to 1 rear gear (that could easily work with a 3.73 swap). The cobra has 305 stock hp and the GT has about 250 with the torque running in the same neighborhood as the hp ratings. The cobra has an all aluminum motor (block and heads) available with a 5 speed manual transmision only (it is a sports car). So, the '97 cobra is a lot quicker than the GT becouse of the hp and the weight. There is no comparison between these two beasts. The 2005 GT has some similar numbers but the cobra still stands on its own.
Buy it dang it...
