Default Rear Differential - 97 Cobra

Greetings all. First time on this forum. Be gentle. :^)

I have a '97 Cobra (convertible) with 92k on the clock. I'm the original owner. My usual garage guys tell me, based on a short test drive where they say the rear end noise is abnormal, that I need to have the rear-end rebuilt at a cost of between $800 to 1300. The car sits in the garage 98% of the time, and hasn't been driven regularly for several years. Does this recommendation sound normal, or might a simple fluid change take care of the noise. Car has never been driven hard - mostly highway miles.

Thanks

Jim

Hard to make a call without driving or hearing it, but if the rear is indeed starting to make noise usually a fluid change isnt going to fix it considering ford rates the 8.8 "lubricating for life" meaning oil only gets changed when the rear needs repair.
