I have a 99 cobra and there is a lot of play in the rearend. Kinda feels like U joints, but I when I looked at them they look fairly new and don't have much play. My friend rocked the rear tire back and forth ( rotating it forward and in reverse and if has about 2-3 inches of play before the gears engage (or so it seems). Has anybody seen this or have and idea what it could be. Thanks for your help

 

Sounds like you may have a bad halfshaft. Check them out, they are not very strong. They aren't cheap either for a new one!!

I priced one for mine at the local ford dealer and it was going to be a about $400 bucks each. I didn't by one. My buddy swapped his irs out of his 03 cobra for a solid axle and sold me his whole irs for not much more than that. It has the 31 spline halfshafts and the 99's had the 28 spline. I'm ready to swap it out for a solid axle now though. I don't know if you would be interested in a used one or not, but sometimes I see them on ebay for a decent price.

I don't know all the details involved in doing the swap, but my buddy done his and he said it wasn't that bad to do. I'm going to have him do mine when I decide to do it. I can talk to him and get some details on it and get back to you if you want
