Default 80's muscle cars..

Well starting to show my age a bit. My buddy and I were talking today and he was telling me how he had a 89 5.0 LX back in the day and he use to run circles around stock GN's (Grand Nationals) and stock 5.7L Iroc Z's. If I can remember correctly it went like this (stock):

1. Buick Grand National
2. 5.7L Iroc Z
3. Mustang HO 5.0.

What do you guys think and also if you had a chance to have either car (stock) which one would it be?

Nope. It went
1. 1989 Trans am 3.8 turbo
2. GNX
3. 5.0 LX
4. Iroc Z 5.7
I bought an Iroc back in 87 new and I got so tired of losing to the 5.0s on front street that I went out and traded for a Mustang a year later.

Yeah, back then the 5.0s were pretty much the car to have. They were pretty good stock, and responded very well to mods. My buddy had a 1993 GT. He put a chip, exhaust and a 70 shot on it and he was taking down Vettes left and right. He totalled it racing and got a 1992 Z-28 with the 5.7 in it. We both agreed the Mustang was faster stock vs stock than the Z-28.

Only the TPI was was 'descent' but it came as an auto (I seem to remember the 91/92 cars being quick, and the rest unremarkable.)... the lightweight 5.0 cars were quicker I believe.... but a heavier GT car would have a tough time. Thankfully the LT1 came along... If I was born 10 years earlier I would be a mustang owner I bet.

Agreed............I had two Fox body 5.0s back in the day. They were faster than the Z28s (unless the 5.0 was an automatic).
I remember my first race with an LT1..........Man, what a big improvement that was...........

forgot to ad the dodge omni to my list. It might have been faster than a few on the list on a good day.

GN>5.0

I had a 89 LX 5.0 Hatch, it was a fun car, kept up with a lot of ride, GNs were not one of them.

True. My buddy who had the 93 Mustang raced his boss who had a GN when his Stang was still stock. He got beat by his boss. After he modded it they didn't get a chane to race again before he totalled it.

LOL it's pretty bad when people think the lt1 was a "big improvement". Altho comparing it to those old 5.7 cars it prolly was. a 5.0 lx 5sp was deff king of the stock mustang vs camaro/firebird wars. GN's were in a step above league.
