Default What is Tuning???

Ok, I'm a newb when it comes to Mustangs. Just picked up my first one as I near the 1/2 century mark. I see lots of posts concerning "tuning" but didn't find a FAQ that explains what it is. I figured out it has something to do with increasing your RWHP, but that's about it. Can someone point me to some info so I can understand what it is all about?

Basically, you reprogram your car's computer with more performance based settings. Some upgrades require a tune to adjust settings to use the upgrades. Some CAIs and exhausts are examples. Even with no changes, different settings will make your car perform differently.

Back in the day, you'd pop the hood, re-jet the carb and tweak the distributor to 'tune' a car, now we can do all that through the vehicles PCM, so even on a completely stock car, we can go in and optimize spark and fuel, increase throttle response, change rev limits, shift points, etc., all of which helps the car make more power and feel fast.
