i need new studs!!! do-it-myself?
hey whats up guys and gals. ive been taking my car to the Goodyear shop over the past year to get my car worked on and the IDIOTS who work there have stripped out most of my studs to the point where the lugs nuts wont even screw on anymore. they deny it all too. anyways... right now i have 5 lugs TOTAL holding BOTH my back wheels on. 2 lugs on one, 3 lugs on the other. just wondering if anybody has experience replacing studs??? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Tapping them out is a little bit of an understatement. Getting the fronts out shouldn't be too difficult, because you can work on those on a bench. The rears will require you to remove the axles to get enough room to get them out. Get a hammer or find someone with a press. If you're lucky, they should come out without too much trouble. Every once in awhile, you'll get one that is really tight. Of course, that will always be the last one.
damn... i was hopin u guys would tell me it would be easy, ha. someone also just told me i may have to remove part of the e-brake to do the rear ones. true? and FYI im just doing the rear studs
It's really not that difficult. Instead of me trying to give you directions from memory, go to your local library and get a manual for your car. They'll have some nice pictures and diagrams, and even step-by-step instructions on removing and installing the axles. It shouldn't take you more than 4 hours to do both sides, and that's for someone who's never done it before. Banging out the old studs is going to be the most physical part of it, but if you've got at least an 20oz hammer, it shouldn't be hard at all.
I'd take it to the shop, with all the work orders showing THEY did the work, and tell them to either replace them, or get reported to the BBB, State enforcement agancies, and/or get sued for the f**kup!
ok so i bought the studs this morning and im planning on putting them on this weekend. im only replacing the rear ones.... does anybody know if i have to mess with taking the hub off to replace them??????
Thats BS...don't wimp out and let them deny it. If you have DOCUMENTATION (receipts) of all the things they have done, it will verify that the rims had to be taken off for certain installs and that THEY in fact put them back on incorrectly and stripped the studs. I had one shop that did that...they tried to hand tighten one and put it on crooked (and yes I was standing there) and he used the air compressor bc he wanted to finish fast....after the lug just kept SPINNING as the threads were GONE..he pulled it off and said he would replace it for free...and he did...on the spot.
But the swap is not HARD but somewhat time consuming and annoying to have to get behind them and smack them out and press the others in etc etc...I would HIGHLY recommend taking them to get installed PROPERLY...you wouldn't want to mess with somethign so important IMO
