if his mechanic couldn't figure out the difference in an exhaust leak and a lifter ticking, he shouldn't be a mechanic. it should be easy to tell if the manifold is loose.

With the engine COLD, start it up and run your hand over the manifold WITHOUT TOUCHING IT!! See if you feel any puffs of air. If there are, you have a leak. If not, drain your oil filter, and then add a quart of tranny fluid to the oil. Run it a week then change the oil. The tranny fluid is a high detergent oil and if you have a sticky lifter, it can get rid of the crud makin it stick.

Its a bomb, no doubt about it. If it isn't a filter problem, check oil levels and run a diagnostics check.

Could be either one. Metal expands when it gets hot. So could be a small exhaust leak or a sticky lifter.
