Q and A

yuh, I know this has been brought up before! But my point is that for the best acceleration regardless of speed when you stomp on it, OD off works best. Try stepping on it from a roll with O/D on. Depending on the RPM it will either drop a gear and go or just slowly accelerate.
If you drive it off the line with your foot planted, there isn't a difference with acceleration, but light to moderate gas pedal pressure you will end up with a conservative different shift pattern with O/D on. With it off, moderate pressure will still wind the motor out.

I agree with everything but the first one. The button is to turn off O/D (4th gear) BUT there is a different shift pattern with it on vs off. With the overdrive on, meaning that the 4th gear is available, the car shifts much sooner and at lower RPM. Mustangs dont' have a ton of power on the bottom of the RPM range, while this helps for gas mileage (shifting conservatively) it sucks for acceleration becuase it will almost always have to down shift if you step on it (lag).
With the O/D off (only three gears available) the engine will wind-out each gear further to make the best use of the three gears (more aggressive shifting). Much better for acceleration.
My rule of thumb on auto trannies is, city and freeway entrances, O/D off (light on the dash), once I'm up to speed, I turn it back on.

1.What the hell does the lil white button under my shifter do? I think its over drive, and can i go faster with it off, faster with it on or save gas? Whats that all about?
Answer: It is to turn off your overdrive (4th gear) It doesn't make you go faster with or with out it, but it's great for fuel economy on the freeway, but not so much in city driving.

here's some proof, tons of other sites explain it too but here's proof in writing to back up what I already know.
