Default Brake Lights Problem

When i turn on the headlights the rear brake lights turn on but on the normal dim setting but when i press down on the brakes they dont light up if the lights are on they dont light up at all fuses checked out ok anyone have any idea why the lights work how they are supposed to when i turn on the headlights but wont fully light up ( or wont turn on at all if i have headlights off ) when i hit the brakes?

not allowed to drive till i figure it out since the cops here in miami pull you over for that alot!

I just had the exact same problem with my car. I had a guy who installed my dvd player hook up my wires to the fuse or a switch or whatever but what happened was it blew the fuse and the flasher switch for my turn signals and hazard lights. I know for my year (1997) the brake lights, turn signals and hazards all run off the same fuse which is number 9 or 14 or something. If they're all alike than its in the fusebox under the dash and is the fuse which is most north (towards front of car)

if your signals dont work either check that fuse (if it applies) then check to see if you need a new flasher.

if it's not a blown fuse check the multi-funtion switch (im pretty sure its inside the steering column attached to the signal lever). I had a problem with my brake lights and hazards before, and all the fuses were good, the contacts inside the multi-funtion switch were just dirty/corroded. I didnt need to take it in for someone to fix it for me so im not sure what the expense would be. but i just cleaned the contacts and everything worked like new...well, the condition when i bought my car...hope it helps.

May also be the brake light switch that is actuated by pressing the brake pedal.
