Default 2.3L Mods

Hey everyone! My friend just bought an 89 2.3L with a 5 speed. what are some cheap and easy mods that we can do to improve his performance? I own a 5.0 and i know that in the 5.0s you can do things like taking out the air silencer and other little things...anything like that for the 2.3? Thanks!

okay.....so....so far i have turbo...and buy a V8 lol. My friend had to settle for the 2.3 because of insurance and not having a job. I know these 4 bangers arent really built for speed but does anyone know anything that can be done?????

i have a 94 ranger 2.3, that engine is a dog. they're just not built for speed, a power adder, like a turbo, is the only way you'll get the type of power you want. on the bright side, they are extraordinarily reliable motors that can really take some neglect. mine has 190,000 miles of pure beatdown.

but, they respond well to underdrive pullies, flex fans or electric fan conversions if you have a fan clutch arrangement. you can pull out the air silencer, on my motor it is actually in the air tube after the filter. chips, a high flow muffler, etc etc etc. you'll spend a lot of time and $$ just to squeeze 20-30 more horses out of it N/A.

here's what i think is a great idea but you never really hear about people doing it...just get forged pistons from a turbo motor and juice the crap out of it.

Okay so they do have an air silencer. I was wondering about that. My friend is new to cars and so hes asking for my help on what to do, but since its at his house i cant look at it. So the air silencer is in the intake tube? Is it where that little box thing in the tube is about half way up?

yeah, you'll see a flanged out region on the air tube, thats where the air silencer is - at least on my motor. when i took it off one day i flipped out, I COULD NOT see through the air tube. no joke, the silencer is designed so that air flows around it to get to the intake. pull that sucker out and experience the half horsepower gain you've been missing. i didn't notice anything at all really after doing it, but any gain is a gain, and if its free the performance/price ratio is infinity!
