gas for speed
hey,
i was just wondering if you guys think i would save gas if i took the backway over the highway (55MPh v. 70MPh)
is 55 the most efficient speed to travel?, you might be on the road a little longer, but you would travel at lower RPMs...correct?
just wondering what you all thought about this.
I have to travel 20 miles to and 20 miles back from class Mon-Thurs, wondering the best way to save gas.
thanks!

No, I believe 65-70 mph is the most efficient speed on newer vehicles.

drive at what ever speed puts you at 2,000 RPMS to get the best gas. final gear of course. in my car thats 65mph. If you drive any fast wind resistance and the law of deminshing returns take a bigger toll. I would guess 55 would be the BEST speed to drive at, thats what the speed limit was back in the 80s
If you drive on that back road and you have stop signs or any place where you would have to slow down for a corner or someone pulling out, then I would say take the highway and go 65mph and just cruise.
