could you? i would assume you can make a 4.0 by changing bore and stroke somehow. is it common? ive never heard of an essex blocked 4.0. the common displacemental change to make with a 3.8 is to go to a 4.2 or 4.3 via a stroker kit. are you talking about swapping in a cologne 4.0 that they use in the new stangs and explorers and rangers? if so i bet thats an even worse investment than getting a 4.2 or 4.3.

supersixmotorsports.com has 4.2 and 4.3 stroker assemblies. But if you dont know much about engines (which im assuming u dont) you will have to get it proffesionally installed, which will get expensive.

i would go with the 4.2. if you're crafty you can get the parts from a 4.2 f150, though im not sure how involved that is. if you aren't too crafty then you can buy a 4.2 from ssm like previously suggested and pay someone to install it. if you take the second option you're probably going to have wasted your money

any serious engine work like that, if you want it done well, will probably run you over $1000... probably more but that's aa very low guess-timate.
