Default 6 speeds...

Well guys, my plan for rebuilding my ride is starting from the rear wheels and moving forward with minor engine mods here and there. That puts me at the transmission after I hit the rear diff. Are there available 6 speed transmissions, and also, how much horsepower is the stock tranny good for?

I know of a place that might be able to get you a 6-speed, gimme a half hour or so

BTW, this would be an excellent investment as far as performance goes. having double over-drive enables youto have 4.30:1 or even 4.56:1 gear ratios out back, and still maintain streetability.

Oh really? Hrm, how much would powertrain efficiency go up? How much more rwhp/rwt we talkin' here? I just know that I need a stronger tranny if I'm gonna go into this project all out, and a 6 speed transmission in an LX is a damn good non-rice exclusivity marker if I ever saw one. Nothing will ever beat the look on a guy's face when he starts gaining on you and you shift a sixth time and pull away even more. RAWR

It's in the eyes that say "WTF HAX, LX's KEN ONLY HAV 5 SPDS".

rear end gears dont add horsepower, they give you a better powerband. Its hard to explain, but if a wheel is completing one rotation after every 12 revolutions of the driveshaft, the vehicle is going to accelerate slower than a vehicle with differential gears that cause a wheel to complete one rotation every 3 revolutions of the driveshaft. Get it?

you'd actually shift for a fifth time going into sixth gear. investment couldn't be further from what i think when you talk about putting a 6 speed into a v6, not to mention thinking it's an excellent investment. you'd need a lot more power for sixth gear to even be of much use to you.

i agree. with a turbo car or with a blower then maybe but it still isn't needed. it would be stronger than the T-5 but only a good deal if you can get one cheap. clutch and bellhousing and cable linkup will be fun to figure out too.

456's on a six are not needed anyways unless you have a cam with 250 dur at .050" lift with say .600"+ valve lift and heavily ported heads. 6th would tame 4.56's but neither that gear or trans is needed. a tremec 5spd would be e better choice if durability over a T-5 is an issue

Get past bolt-ons? What the hell do you mean by that? o.O

Right now it's all research but come tax return I'm rebuilding the whole rear end. I've got several thousand dollars just sitting in the bank waiting for an informed purchase. So far what I'm looking at is a 6 speed tranny if I can find one, a steeper gearing and a true trac. Then later a rebuilt 4.2 from a F150, supercharger/turbo, and then chassis work and body stuff too. Bolt ons? Please.

Secondly, the more efficient the powertrain is, the more of the power that is normally lost through the powertrain hits the ground. You don't had HP, you add RWHP by making for a more efficient powertrain, you put more of that power to the ground. So yeah, you'd add RWHP, and RWT, but that doesn't change **** at the flywheel. :\

And the last person taht told me I wouldn't figure **** out or do well said I sucked at computers. Heh. He still lives with his mother... luagh.

Most people on here go around saying all these big plans on what they're doing to their car, but never get around to it. It's not an insult, and if you do get some decent power, even cooler.

I understand, man, I really do. But I can't own that car and not do anything to it. I'd lose my ****ing mind. And you are planning on removing the letters from a cobra bumper? Got a bumper you can buy like that or are you going to do fiberglass work? If so, we need to talk.

Ah, did mymath wrong, 5 shifts.Sorry... I'm used to working with base 0 anymore. *shrug*

Mind gettrained after a while...
